We have recently imported a small batch of South African Railways pattern firing shovels, with a blade 18" x 8", though considerably deeper than our standard heavy duty shovel. The front of the blade is nearly flat to improve its ability to cut through the coal in the bunker. This shovel can be used to shift a serious amount of coal, as some SAR locos were, and still are hand fired with a 63 sq ft grate. The handle is 21" long, of stout proportion, pretty much in line with the blade i.e. no pronounced crank between blade and handle. Weight 6lb. A bit costly due to shipping and import costs, but a bargain compared to shipping one on its own.
